Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine virtual school as my educational path. From age 4 to 13, I went to brick-and-mortar school like most everyone else. All that changed in 8th grade when I got sick and enrolled in Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA). There are obvious benefits to online learning. I roll out of bed at 7:45 am to attend 8 am Live Class Connects; I get more sleep than most teens my age. Annoying class clowns are no longer a distraction. Those guys are muted by the teacher with a push of a button.
There are academic advantages as well: individualized plans that allow me to progress at my own pace, instant quiz scores and automatic feedback with re-learn opportunities, and certified teachers who will work with me one-on-one.
I love the flexibility and personal responsibility for my own learning. In fact, when cleared medically, I chose to stay at WIVA. My goal? To double-up classes so I could graduate on time; that would not have been possible in traditional school.
